“Well constructed” argument from my mom, “I gave birth to you!”

A real debate is not about winning, is about expanding your mental and knowledge horizons

You’re absolutely correct here.
There seriously needs to be more effort the train people to deal with disagreements.

The only similarity between arguing with your parents and online is that you can never win.

Fr! One of the best feelings is being able to diffuse an argument, and end the conversation in a very civil and respectful way. I kind of love getting into online arguments just so I can try and diffuse them.

I think your misunderstanding the point of Twitter. It's not to have an argument. It's to literally shout into the void

Here in France, learning how to debate is a big thing in school! I’m an English teacher and I worked with a history teacher to create a whole lesson plan on how to learn to argue with someone as it is part of both of our curriculum for the kids. Some adults should definitely take those lessons too tho

If only I could stop my tears while arguing which chokes my voice box and cause me headache I would be unstoppable 😅

Learning to argue is different from learning to debate. Arguing is vehemently standing in your position and protecting it bo marter what, while debating is bringing everything to the table regarding the topic at hand and trying to reach either a consensus or a conclusion oriented to one of the sides. Other than making this clear, I 100% agree with what is presented in this short!

you know you lived in an abusive house when your family would spend an avarage of 45 minutes NOT arguing

And it's obvious teachers themselves don't know that with how hypocritical they are. Like, my 2nd least favourite teacher (also my homeroom teacher unfortunately) saw camera footage of one of my classmates hitting the vending machine and my other classmates witnessing it.
It was a well known thing that he does that, even amongst the teachers, but she went off on them for not telling her (they weren't participating and in fact immediately moved away)

This is how it went:
T: Why didn't you tell me? You're all going to stay after school for this (idk what they did since I didn't witness the event, ig she was lecturing them)
C: But you already knew he does that, it's common knowledge
T: But we had a conversation and he promised he wouldn't do that
C: How were we supposed to know about that?
T: YOU WEREN'T! I KEPT IT PRIVATE!
C: But that makes no sense
2nd C: just stop arguing dude (she kinda had a history of being relatively hypocritical and confirmation biased, plus she's "brutally honest", which is incredibly unprofessional for a teacher because it's just an excuse to insult students that can't insult her back to her face)

I believe its because its easier to conquer when everyone is divided

SEL (social-emotional learning) is a thing incorporated in to schools starting in Kindergarten here in Washington state. But they gotta be learning this stuff at home, too.

Honestly, all I know is that if I'm having an argument, then it's a discussion where me and another person are trying to find out which one of us is right. However, arguing is more of a wrestling match, but with words, it's a bit more heated. I like having arguments, but I kinda hate arguing.

In my French classes through the years (keep in mind I went to a French school all my life) we actually did have debate schoolwork in our curriculums. Idk if it’s just something my school board did but we also didn’t have debate club so maybe it was in replacement of that

There was an English class book I read that made the point that everything is an argument and it's pretty true

I think you would be well suited for classical education. These are all things that i someone raised with a classical education have learned and continue to refine. in fact, my highschool program has policy debate built inot the carriculum as you proposed. I wish more people could experience what i have, it would seriously change the way people talk to each other for the better
