Reverb is an incredible tool for creating depth & space, but if it’s used incorrectly it can create muddiness & a crowded mix. Luckily there are parameters that can not only fix this issue, but help create a spacious & dreamy sounding reverb.

Pre-delay is the gap of time between the direct sound & the decay of the sound. When used properly this tool can help create the perfect amount of space between your audio source & the reverb. We will be using some math in this video, so get your calculators ready & be prepared to become an expert at pre-delay!

Follow along as professional engineer Eric “Realistic” Michael breaks down his techniques to executing the perfect pre-delay.

I use the word "pristine" to describe most very clean and crisp recordings. For example, Nashville Country during a chorus seems to have a lot of reverberation and yet not washing out the sound. My own recordings do not have this crisp, clean, pristine quality so I am searching your video to obtain that. You may reply directly to my email if that is appropriate, with any suggestions. Thank you!

Hey man one question! For those bpm's that can be either fast or slower, for example, choosing between 170 or 85, which math should I use? sometime I prefer the faster bpm just because the faster click keeps me on time better, so that's what ill set my project to, But would it be better to use 85 when doing the math for the pre delay? Or does it depend on how fast the vocal lines are? etc. Great video by the way! Thanks

I like your tutorials, I have been trying to figure out the reverb and delays. I know there is pre delay for reverbs and delays is a different effect. From my understanding these 2 are used when trying to make the vocal sit nicely in a song.

Example, most of the time the vocal sits where the snare hits, or slightly above. Reverb can be used for depth, to push or make it seem the vocal is pushed back, delay to bring it a little forward and with the proper volume the vocal will sit properly in a song. is that correct?

is predelay that sound effect that comes before the vocals even really start so it sounds like *real vocals kick in* and i hate you*?
