A brief history of Astronomy and Astrology - The unequal siblings

Astronomy, the study of the observation of the celestial bodies, is considered the oldest of the natural sciences. It was initially closely connected with religious and mythological beliefs. Astronomy thus has the same roots as astrology, which assumes a connection between celestial bodies and human fate. This video tells about the common childhood and youth of the two dissimilar siblings, astronomy, and astrology, about the Sumerians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Chinese and Maya. And also, about the influence of the Islamic astronomy and the development towards the Middle Ages.

This video was created from several lectures on the subject in 2017-2020, made by the author Andrea Di Domenico, Idstein (Germany). It is not for any commercial purposes but for education only and may be used and shown for educational purposes, such as in schools.

Note on my own business: In the part about sun dials I repeatedly speak about the "shadow of the sun". Of course, I know that the sun does not cast a shadow (although one can argue about that... :D) - but the shadow caused by the sun - in this case that of the sundial's shadow rod, is meant... I admit that the wording is a bit awkward at this point.

Thank you for a wonderful visual explanation of the precession of the equinoxes. As a teacher of astrology, it is one of the hardest concepts for a beginner to understand. As a professional astrologer It confirms the signs of the zodiac are a backdrop to the energies of the planets in determining an outcome. The signs are the theatre, the houses are the stage and the planets are the actors upon it.

Damn, the complexity of all of this, and just as I want to better my understanding of Astrology.

The zodiacal signs are not about the constellations. It's about the cicle of the Sun divided in four seasons with three fases each. It has to do with agriculture, the most important human activity. That's how it all began.
