Actually, the crust is 30 miles thicker in the back than it is in the front. The Maria is caused by the lava making pools on the surface, and since the back side was thicker, it was harder for the lava to surface.

I propose a different theory:
The reason the far side of the Moon has closer and smaller craters is because that side is ALWAYS facing away from us. In other words, it's facing the rest of the universe. Always. As time passes, that 'exposed' part gets hit more and more.  Just my personal theory on the matter.

The moon isn't actually locked in an orbit around us. Its orbit is actually growing about a centimeter larger every year. Eventually, it might in fact leave us.
