Poor Little Joe-Red Patterson's Piedmont Log Rollers

Показать описание
I've been doing family research on my family and came across a cousin who recorded 8 songs in 1927, so I wanted to make a playlist where all of his songs could be in one spot. The Pattersons in 1840 came from Ridgeway, Henry County, Virginia, but when the civil war broke out, 2 Pattersons, David, and Jarret fought for Virginia while 3, Thomas, Daniel, and John fought for North Carolina. Thomas and Daniel went on to move to Rockingham after the war, while David, Jarret, and John stayed in Henry County. Daniel Patterson is John Fletcher "Red" Patterson's Grandfather while David Mays Patterson is my 3rd Great Grandfather. 160 years later a few of us Pattersons still live in Henry County, but as far as I'm aware only David's decedents of a Great Grandson still reside in our home county.
Background: John Fletcher "Red" Patterson was born in 1900 in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina, where later in life he worked from a Textile Worker to a Logger. In the mid-1920s, he moved up north to Fieldale in Henry County and worked in the Fieldcrest Textile Mill. Now a lot of Pattersons enjoy playing instruments, my great grandfather and I included, John seemed to be one of those as well and enjoyed playing banjo and singing. John became friends with Dick and Lee Nolen of Stuart and Percy Setliff I think of Danville, where John formed the band Red Patterson's Piedmont Log Rollers with himself as Lead Banjo and Vocal, Dick Nolen as Tenor Banjo, Lee Nolen as Guitarist, and Percy Setliff as Fiddler. The band would play for Fieldcrest company events and flatfoot parties, eventually, another man who worked at Fieldcrest named Kelly Harrell who had a history with recordings urged the band to record a Victor record at Charlotte. On August 12th, 1927 the band showed up and recorded 8 songs that sold well locally around Henry and Rockingham but didn't earn enough money to be called back. After a few members got married and the great depression worsened, the band broke up and John moved back to Rockingham where he continued playing banjo in his spare time. John had 2 sons with his wife Geneva and passed away in 1969.
