i worked in a jewellers for 8 years and later in life have dug 3 gold coins, one medieval.gold comes out looking like gold.thats does not look like gold.and diamonds were not set in rubbish metal, gold does not discolour.

Did you take a GPS reading on the spot that you found it? I don't know if the little missing diamonds fell out there, but it would be tempting to put a few spade fulls in a bucket and dump it in a big tray of water to see if anything sparkles.
