What's the difference between an EA and a CPA?

I'm asked this question often, even by other financial professionals! An Enrolled Agent is licensed through the Internal Revenue Service to advocate for taxpayers and can practice in all 50 states.

A CPA on the other hand is licensed by their state and are licensed to do a variety of accounting functions including but not limited to taxes. But that's just the thing...a CPA doesn't necessarily specialize or even do taxes.

Whereas an EA is going to always do taxes and most likely do representation work as well, dealing with the IRS on behalf of their client.
