Splicing is an essential tool if you are a fishermen or have an interest in boats. It is just a handy knowledge to have generally. Here I am splicing 10mm polysteel rope, it is mainly used for lobster and crab pots, because it is reasonably priced, and is a very strong and abrasion resistant rope. Its far more durable than polypropylene, and around 30% stronger. Its far more uv resistant too. Its a harder lay than polypropylene, which mean it is a stiffer rope, making it harder to splice than soft lay ropes. I'm splicing one end of a 100 foot length. These are the spacings I use on my crab and lobster parlour pots. Having the rope in 100 ft lengths, instead of a continous rope, makes it easier to handle, store, and if you ever get a shank of pots roll up and tangle, its far, far easier to untangle.
