A potential effect of pronounced obstruction is hyperinflation of the lungs. On rare occasions, this can also occur independently of an obstruction.
A characteristic of hyperinflation is the change in lung volumes: The vital capacity decreases in favor of the residual volume. In addition, the FEV1:FVC ratio is normal or decreased, depending on whether or not there’s an additional obstruction.
Outline:
00:00 - Obstruction
03:24 - Hyperinflation
09:16 - Restriction
11:30 - Mixed
