Its called RAST. Recover, Assist, Secure, and Traverse. And if it doesnt work the flight deck can't get certified and your stuck on the ship for a week in port fixing it.

Former Lynx pilot here (in French Navy). The harpoon was very efficient but it didn't help to synchronise with the ship in rough seas

The problem with grabbing the cable by hand is that helicopters can develop a charge differential from the ground under certain conditions. Normally this charge differential is discharged when the helicopter touches down, but if you have a person grabbing a cable lowered from the helicopter then the discharge goes through the person grabbing the cable.

I knew that on aircraft carriers the planes had a line that held them back while landing, but I didn't know there was something like that for helicopters! Very cool.

Basically that's how I land my drone on my sailboat while under sail ⛵️... grab it out of the air and flip it over quickly. Haven't lost one yet; at least not from the boat 😢

Im not quite understanding how the british system helps you land. I get that it'll locl you in place once landed, but how does it assist with landing on a ship that may be dropping a decent amount in not that bad of seas?

Why not use a magnet for wrecking yards?
