Hi Jeremy, Slightly confused with the difference between "ip tcp mss" and "ip tcp adjust-mss"

HI. Thanks for the great video. I have a question regarding adjustment of MSS. As you mentioned in your video about adjusting MSS value from 1460 to 1436 in R1 Tunnel Interface, actually MSS is the size of actual data which comes from App, Pres, Sess Layers, so When Server1 sent a fragment with size of 1460, which you adjusted to 1436, where did the remaining adjusted fragement go, is it dropped??? is it fragmented??? thanks for the reply.

Ip tcp adjust-mss isn’t triggering debug messages for me.

Im in a physical lab with 4 1941 routers, and 2 2960 switches (such fun!) as well as windows hosts on either end. I configure r1’s T0 int with “ip tcp adjust-mss 1436” and enable debugging of ip tcp transactions. However, when I attempt to ssh from srv1 to srv2, no debug message is displayed.

Sadly I can only use wire shark on the outgoing Ethernet interface on SRV1/2… which does suggest the process is occurring as the SYN/ACK from srv2 contained the appropriate 1436 mss… but I’m concerned about why I can’t see debugging at all to know for sure. Other types of debugging currently display in the command line fine, and the output of “show debug” on R1 is “TCP special event debugging is on”

Any input or advice on why this is would be much appreciated, thanks!

slightly weird to still hear people call a packet trace a "packet capture", I swear all of us called these a "packet trace" back in the 90s :>
