The Yak-52, a Soviet-era primary trainer aircraft, first flew in 1976 and has since become a key player in both military and civilian training. Designed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau, this two-seat, single-engine monoplane is known for its robust and agile design, featuring an all-metal construction and a low-wing configuration. It is powered by a Vedeneyev M14P nine-cylinder radial engine, producing 360 horsepower, and uses a two-bladed, variable-pitch propeller for a wide range of aerobatic maneuvers.

A unique aspect of the Yak-52 is its extensive pneumatic system, which operates the engine starting, landing gear, flaps, and wheel brakes. This system was chosen to ensure the aircraft could function in rugged environments with minimal maintenance.

Initially, the Yak-52 was used by the DOSAAF in the Soviet Union to train both civilian sport pilots and military pilots. Its design allows for inverted flight for up to two minutes, making it an excellent platform for aerobatic training. The aircraft was produced in Romania by Aerostar from 1977 to 1998, under the designation Iak-52, and became a popular choice for aerobatic competitions. It continues to be used in the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) World Aerobatic Yak 52 Competition.

Today, the Yak-52 remains a favorite among aviation enthusiasts and aerobatic pilots due to its ability to perform complex maneuvers and its rugged design. Recently, a Ukrainian Yak-52 was adapted for an unconventional role, being equipped with a machine gun and successfully shooting down a Russian UAV, highlighting the aircraft’s versatility and enduring legacy.
