For anyone trying to use prerecorded audio with this method, you need to right-click the speaker icon (Record Monitoring button) and select "Monitor Track Media When Recording" and then record. Or right click media item and select "Apply track/take FX to items as new take (MIDI output)" instead of record for a faster result if working with a long item.

It's crazy how useful these tutorials are. I recorded a bass track for a song and wanted to use a completely different sound for it. I converted it to midi, used a bass plugin, and it worked perfectly. Thanks for that tutorial.
