Dude you are the missing manual for Herbstluftwm! I've been running hlwm 99.9% for the past 4yrs at least and have yet to fully grok the structure of chain commands. Stuff like this I have just accepted will have to be done manually in multiple steps. Thanks a ton for this quick bit of insight.

Thank you for the video! Glad to see another Herbst fan on here. It doesn't get the love it deserves.
Something I discovered in my own config (Herbst on Debian Sid): COMMAND ORDER MATTERS. I was looking for a way to launch VirtualBox on its own workspace. This is how I got it to work. Btw, my Mod key is the Super key, so I have to type Mod1 for Alt.

hc keybind Mod1-Shift-v chain, use_index 4 --skip-visible, move_index 4 --skip-visible, spawn virtualbox

If I put move_index before use_index, my terminal would move before VirtualBox would open, so when I got to the target workspace, I'd have my terminal on top, and VirtualBox on the bottom. Putting use_index first allows VirtualBox to be launched on its own workspace without taking my terminal along for the ride.

I'm pretty sure i3/sway can also 'chain' commands. It's done the same way except you don't need to type chain. Herbstluft in my experience is quite similar to i3 actually, the only advantage of herbstluft that I could find is the double window border thing that you pointed out before

That’s pretty cool! I’ve been using HLWM last year and now I am back exploring it again. Looking for a good tiling WM to replace my Openbox config but nothing really does it as well as Herbstluft.
I only have some issues with fullscreen games locking up the wm or losing access to the keyboard for some reason.

I do think writing this set up in rust would be a neat goal eventually.

But I'm assuming with your wm, how would you go about configuring it? With a scripting language? Yaml?

Iced and a few other rust projects are getting love since System76 is working so hard on Cosmic.

Do you know what I would need to set up for the focus follows the mouse on HLWM with two or more open applications?

Also, I like to have certain programs open certain tags and then follow with focus, like "hc rule class="Firefox" tag=3 switchtag=on". I have four or five programs that I use a lot and it's nice to switch over to the tag when it opens.

I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison with i3. I know a lot of people look down on i3 because it is not configured in any programming language, but the option is there if you want. So, I don't really understand the negative attitude towards i3.

That's why personalization/customization is so important, people have different tastes... I actually hate this behavior from Herbstluftwm and you love it and it's okay ( but you're wrong :P )

I still think Xmonad is faster and allow more configuracion. I have not been able to install it in Void
