Hidden Counter Attack Mechanic (Mistranslation Error) Black Myth Wukong

A bit of a weird one here, the mechanic is in the game but the way this text is translated makes no sense at all. Let me know if its just me and my weird Scottish language lol, but it took me a good couple hours to figure out what this ment.

So essentially it allows you to mitigate all damage and counter the enemy but only when you are attacking and then press HEAVY attack during the enemies attack! Like i said i will be doing more content and guides for Wukong, loving the game so far, i will be live playing it on youtube/twitch and if you want to chat to us discord link below :D

So effectively a more accurate translation should be:
During your light attack combo, performing a heavy attack will consume a focus point to perform a "resolute strike".
If timed during an opponent's attack, the Destined One will "see through" their action, nullifying the damage with a strong counter that can more easily stagger the target.

thanks so much, did not understand why my rod wasn't lighting up, literally didn't make much sense of it.

You can't believe how relieved I am to see I'm not the only one who was racking their brain trying to figure out what the hell that skill did. I was really starting to have serious doubts about my reading comprehension before this video so thank you.

I accidently discovered this last night. I kept doing that move on the black wind kings fire breath and was able to avoid getting burned. This explains it lol

You are right that the wording is confusing. I'm Chinese, and I had to read it three times in Chinese to sort of understand what the description was trying to convey. Even then, I wasn't 100% sure until I watched this video.

For those who are curious, there were two types of Chinese used in the 16th century: 文言文 (Classical Chinese) and 白话文 (Vernacular Chinese). Classical Chinese was primarily used in writing, especially in official documents, because it was concise and its meaning wasn't influenced by local accents. However, one had to learn Classical Chinese to understand or speak it. Vernacular Chinese, on the other hand, was the language people actually spoke in their daily lives.

The Journey to the West was mainly written in Vernacular Chinese, some poems in the noval were written in the Classical Chinese, but the vernacular language of the 16th century differs from modern Chinese, particularly in phrasing and wording. Many descriptions in the game are worded in a style similar to 16th-century Vernacular Chinese. While this style is already a bit confusing in Chinese, translating it into other languages while trying to maintain the "16th-century Vernacular Chinese feel" can lead to even more confusion.

Been using this technique since Chapter 1. The timing is more forgiving than perfect dodge, you can do it as the enemy winds up for the attack, not just when you're about to get hit. From my experience for the first 3 hits of a combo you have to wait for the attack animation to complete to execute it, on the 4th hit of the combo you can do it before it completes the attack animation.

The thrust stance also does the same but even better. It allow Wu Kong to back out with invincibility frame and counter attack. Some bosses have super armor and can toughen through Smash stance but the thrust count as a counter attack and it will always stagger bosses.

This mechanic is basically the entire crux and bread & butter of Thrust Stance and its 'stabbystabby loop'. Stabbystabby, enemy winds up, press heavy right as they attack you to backdash and also counterflow, then heavy stab, and cancel heavy stab right back into stabbystabby... lather rinse repeat.

I’ve literally been waiting for someone to make a video about this. Thanks for the explanation!

As Chinese I've just noticed there are such translation issues here. I will explain to you why they translated it this way.

The "resolute stirke" its Chinese term is "化解攻击, " a concept derived from the traditional kung-fu Tai Chi. Technically, it is not a parry but a speicial way to guide the force of the opponent's attack elsewhere. In Chinese legends, the most famous Tai Chi master is Zhang Sanfeng, who could even use the opponent's force to attack themself. In fact, after successfully using this move to block, Wukong's attack power would also increase. Additionally, Tai Chi originates from Taoism, and Wukong's master, the Puti Zushi, is a Taoist god, which is why they used the term "Hua Jie" here.

So basically the translator might have been making a trade-off because using "Parry" could more accurately convey the meaning but would lose some background information.

Thank you!!! I read this and had no clue how the mechanic worked. The menu gif didn't help and nothing seemed to work based on the description. Thanks so much for sharing

THIS! Thank you! I remember gameplay trailers showing this but couldn’t figure out after launch how it was done I kept telling my friends there’s a parry

Also a reminder: the "Endeavor" skill gives you the ability to do Varied Attacks like Resolute Strike without focus, but you can't parry with it, and although there is no mention of using a focus point in Thrust Stance's "Lucky Strike" skill, a focus point is needed to See Through and counter with that too.

The English explanation that you can “see through” an incoming attack is actually lore-consistent. In the myth of the monkey king one of his many abilities were “the eyes of fire and gold” i.e. able to see through the tricks of his enemies. By translating it this way the game is building on that lore, though perhaps a bit misleading since the counter move is rarely explained this way.
My fav iframe move is the back step poke btw I find it more fun to use for small enemies than resolute strike

Really useful video, thankyou. I'd had this very problem and re-read the in game skill description a million times and still couldn't work it out. Makes sense now!

"See through" isn't actually a mistranslation error. It's the direct translation, and it's also the direct translation of the symbol in Sekiro. In martial arts, you "see through" (ie predict) your opponent's next move for a counter-attack.

Something to point out... If an enemy has a multiple string attack you will only not take damage on their last string so make sure you're not using resolute strike in the beginning of their string.

How you explained your initial understanding is the exact way that I understood it. In fact, I had been using my heavy during light combos because I thought it was doing some sort of a resolute strike dealing additional damage. Clearly, I’m not paying close enough attention to realize that it wasn’t doing anything lol.

Appreciate the tip, i had no idea what the description was trying to tell me so I stopped trying to attempt this move pretty quickly
