Physical media is more important than ever

Physical media is more important than ever. There's a lot of talk out there across the internet about physical media being a thing of the past and everything going digital, with us being forced to stream music or tv and movies through apps such as Spotify or YouTube or Netflix or HBO Max, or buy our games digitally through GoG or Steam or Epic or whatever site. But with licensed games disappearing, movies being used as tax write-offs, TV shows cancelled and removed from streaming services all together, and music going out of print, the need for DVDs, CDs, records, video tapes, and discs and cartridges of video games has become obvious for the sake of media preservation, because we're winding up with lost media at an alarming rate and these companies want us more and more to get comfortable not owning the media we buy, with subscription services such as Gamepass or Disney+ or whatever else. I'm tired of pretending like things are fine. Libraries should get copies of this media so we can preserve it and people will be able to experience it. In this video I talk about the importance of being able to experience media and how that's more important than pretty pictures or perfect sound, as a way of seeing the big picture. I also talk about stores such as Best Buy phasing out their physical releases and the negative impact it will have on collecting and media in general.

physical media is dead, physical media dying, physical media vs streaming, physical media 2024, physical media vs digital media, physical media video games, physical media best buy, physical media is not dead, physical media is dying, physical media is not dying, best buy physical media rant,

What I miss most is the special features and commentaries

I never gave up my DVD collection or switched to streaming. I like having a movie and TV library catered solely for me. I also like knowing my DVDs can't be censored or edited like so much media is now. I also don't like to rent. I like to own things, not pay the rich for what they will always own.

Disney needs to be forced to un-vault the entire 20th Century Fox movies from the 30s, 40s, 50s.

I canceled all my streaming services got sick of searching for movies that had been removed.
I only buy physical games and have jumped back into collecting 4K and Blu Ray movies

As a physical media lover, I must say… Marie Kondo advocates for keeping what brings joy. At no point in her books or show, to my knowledge, does she advocate for going digital, or purging collections.

I value physical media. I used to have laserdiscs, vhs tapes, cassette tapes, vinyl records, and even was cylinders. I wish I didn’t have to get rid of those in my move. I fortunately still have 4K ultra discs, blu rays, dvds, and one CD. Most of my video games are physical copies.

When I was a teenager I used to download songs on my old computer from music and archives websites back in the 2000s, before streaming came along. On my computer there were more than 5000 songs that I downloaded more than 10 and 20 years ago, some songs even dated back from the late 90s. Now I have copied all those songs on my notebook and edited some of them, fixing the metadata such as the title of the song, the album, putting the corresponding image, the year the album was released, the genre of the song, etc.

Although they are not physical media, but files, they have the same functionality, since I can listen to my songs whenever I want, without being subscribed to a streaming service or being connected to the Internet, which makes me highly value all the songs that I downloaded in particular, and physical media in general. We have to keep physical media alive.

SKIP streaming! We're slowly building a Disney classic physical media collection. You pay once and own it.

First time viewer here. I share many of your opinions, and I too have faced the same ridicule and confusion from some people when I told them I happily collect physical media and prefer it over digital or streaming.

I totally agree with you. It's a terrifying prospect the way our society is pushing this narrative on us that physical media is dead and we should only download or stream our content. It's like some bizarre parallel world where we can only ever rent what we love or want to own, but never actually own it. But that's now what's becoming our reality, and I hate it. I own a massive blu-ray and DVD collection, and I'm proud of it. I own films you can't even find on streaming, and the best part? I retain all of the original special features too. I love cinema; I want to see how films are made and the people who made them. You lose all of this on streaming; yet you pay the same price to rent the movie or for a streaming service as you would had you just owned the DVD.

I'm the same with games, too. I'm so glad I kept my PS2 and all my original games. Not only are most of the games I own virtually impossible to find now, or priced at a ridiculous level I wouldn't be able to afford anyway, but as you said, pretty much all of these games would just be lost to time. One of my favourite FPS games of all-time on PS2, Black, has never been uploaded anywhere else as a game you can download or play. If I didn't own my PS2 and my copy, I'd never be able to play it again. And many of the games from that generation hold up better than most today -- It's not all about graphics, as you said; it's about replayability, fun, the story, and the PS2 gen had all that in spades.

I digitized my entire collection of movies to a personal server, tossed out the boxes, but kept the discs and artwork in space saving plastic sleeves. Best of both worlds. I refuse to toss any of my media because it could vanish or be altered one day.

I've also kept all of my PC and console games from when I was a child and onward and always buy physical if I can.

You are absolutely right! A couple of years ago I was contemplating getting rid of my DVDs & BR because streaming seemed the future. Am I glad I kept pretty much everything, because there are loads of movies I can’t find anywhere, who rest safely on my shelf until I need them!

I bet Best Buy believe they made mistake getting rid of dvds & blurays, but they will never admit it! The stores have all this extra open space, and less customers when I go....😃

Honestly the part that I like best about physical media is that if I decide one day that I don't want it anymore, I could easily flip it on Ebay and charge what I want for it. Sure, I can uninstall a digital game, but once it's there, it's there.

Most modern current-gen video game discs are just barebones and you have to download it the rest of it. So what happens when those servers go down?

Steam, Epic and their mindless fanboys/girls can have their digital overlords. For the past 3 years I buy everything I can in physical medium. Nobody can take it away or alter it "for my convenience" or for what passes for moral guardianship nowadays.

I am a huge fan of physical media and I still collect Blu-rays to this very day.

This is soooo much more serious than how individuals prefer to consume media. I personally hate clutter. Collecting physical media could be inconvenient even when it was widely available. But the digitalization of everything was a mistake intentionally promoted to the benefit of corporations, government organizations and NGO’s intent on making everything a subscription (rent seeking) to services vulnerable to all sorts of political pressure, and the rent seeking is not just limited to media but housing (out of reach of most young people in many areas, making the building of stable communities very difficult) transportation, food, everything. But worse! It’s about control of information. We are facing a sort of Library of Alexandria situation. I’ve watched streaming versions that have clearly been edited for any variety of licensing or political reasons. Publishers are admittedly editing classic and children’s literature ( & not just for overt gratuitous racism, homophobia, etc…) The public library in my area has been purged of all but a very narrow spectrum of acceptable thought. Keepers of physical media are now defenders of history and culture. They’re the only backup file/ recovery for what looks to be a corrupted crashing real world operating system. I’m not opposed to digital content but if you love something or think it’s important you must preserve it because if it becomes inconvenient in any way to the powers that be or desired narrative (and that might simply be that some things, policies or ideas were actually better or performed better than what is currently prevalent, and alternatives are possible) it will at best be edited & at worst disappeared all together. There were those who promoted the idea that “you will own nothing and you will be happy”- W.E.F.. But they have proven untrustworthy with the world’s art, history and cultural heritage. We have to take it into our own hands. It’s safer dispersed among the people than concentrated under centralized powers. Humans need to maintain and defend their right and even ability to have divergent and even subversive thoughts. We are to believe that in the past there was always nothing but racism, sexism & homophobia, not beauty or and objectively better quality of life in many places and many ways. We are to focus only on the technological advances and convenience of not having to do things IRL or deal with other human beings. The alternative to resisting this is absolutely dystopian. The kind of thing that books and movies of the past tried to warn us about and the reason many of those very books and movies are at risk of someday being disappeared.

I’ve already been physical media and yes I much prefer it over digital goods. It’s important to me since I was a kid.
