If one thing is kept in mind, it should be this: just think of Connie Neilson's Lucilla & Spencer/ Paul's Lucius as conflated characters- that's how I was able to buy the history-ignoring reality the first Gladiator was; Connie was a conflation of Lucilla & Marcea- respectively, the sister & mistress of Commodus (he actually had a couple of sisters, but let's ignore that) -- the historical Lucilla had two sons; Lucius Verus, son of Lucius Verus actually died young- _but_ she had a son in her second marriage- & he survived into the period that followed Commodus' reign - no spoilers, but...
