Goin Away Baby Jimmy Rogers Lesson by Johnny Burgin

Yes, this is my ELEVENTH lesson on Jimmy Rogers (if you count his parts Little Walter's Can't Hold Out Much Longer and Juke). But really if you look at it, they're all completely different. Goin Away Baby is what I think of as a 'riff' song, there's a figure that answers the lyric. I think the real pioneer of RIFF songs is Sonny Boy Williamson 1. And look at all the songs that came from Sonny Boy 1 into the 50s Chicago blues era-- Sloppy Drunk, this one, and so many more. Everyone loves a good 'riff' song and they definately translated into rock really well. The tricky part about the riff is deciding how are you gonna go at it, thumbpick and finger pick or an up stroke/down stroke with your thumb. I think those are the two things goin on between Muddy and Jimmy.
The other big element besides the riff is the 'THUMP' on the bass, it's very strong between Jimmy and Muddy (and Muddy hits the open A string along with the E string on the 1 which actually sounds great). So another big element to Jimmy Rogers is the Big Bill Broonzy element of that propulsive thump that's a floor to the song. If you get one thing from this lesson-- try to get that THUMP goin!
