I was a GSM, onboard the USS Fletcher DD 992, in the 1980s. Loved my time in the Navy.

This was my job from 1987-2001 GSCS (SW) EOOW Retired. Great career choice. Yes plenty of unglamorous hard work as well.

I was GSM back in late 80s. This brings back so many memories

I was a GMG, at the time I got out, I seriously thought of changing rate to GSM, really good transferable skills.

Lol they sugarcoat other stuff that a gsm do. Like cleaning the bilge, flange changeout bullshit evolution, cleaning the exhaust and intake plenums. And staying late in the ship doing practically nothing because MP wants to know if the ice cream machine is working.

"We're in charge of the Engines, to help the ship move.." === Well that's a relief.

as a sub MMN, i love how they breezed over the "electrical" "mechanical" discussion like they've never heard of "electro-mechanical" lol

I ship on october 6, 2020. I’m kinda nervous because I have no idea of anything related to GSM, but I took it because my recruiter said it is a good job.

GSMs have it rough man, spending all day in Main 1 & 2 sweating in 100 degrees covered in oil.

I am retired Gasser (slang for Gas Turbine Tech, back in my day at least), GSMC 1988-2008. CG-60, FFG-28, DD-982, CG-55 and FFG-55 (Top Snipe). Played with LCAC's briefly, hated it . I miss those engines... There isn't a more reliable engine on the planet. Gas mileage sucks, but the power to weight ratio is insane.

I was a GSE3 when I was selected as an instructor for the GS A School in Great Lakes. I actually taught the Engine Phase of the School (LM2500 and Allison 501k-17 Engines) which is ironic because im an E.

To anyone reading this. Do yourself a favor and be a GSE instead. Way more rewarding. And you learn a ton more. I made gse2 before my 2 year mark

Would an engine like this be allowed to be used on civilian vessels?
