Overcrowding levels at correctional facilities around South Africa have reached nearly 40%. This was revealed in a written response to Parliament by the Department of Justice and Correctional Services. The department says it is at the receiving end of the criminal justice system and acknowledges the impact of overcrowding on its resources. The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union or POPCRU has also expressed concern for its members.
