Steven H. Kirkland, MD, Virginia Mason pulmonologist and hyperbaric medicine physician, shares why cases of carbon monoxide poisoning increase during inclement weather or major storms. He offers ways to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, as well as the various treatment options Virginia Mason offers to treat patients, including the use of the region's largest hyperbaric medicine chamber.
To prevent carbon monoxide poisonings:
1) Avoid using alternate heating sources that produce carbon monoxide (burning charcoal or kerosene heaters).
2) Install an active carbon monoxide detector and check the batteries frequently.
3) When using a backup generator during power outages, make sure you monitor it frequently.

In all cases, call 911 in case of emergency or if you are experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms.

Kerosene heaters are safe when used correctly. They will also keep you warm and thus prevent you from freezing and dying.
