My only issue is that these creators need to make better deals with marvel/dc so the can get compensated, because they deserve it. Many of these creators will either A: sell off their characters outright, which in that case you screwed yourself, or B: you will sign bad contracts in which any change that they make to a character will void them having to compensate you.

DC didn't screw Bill Finger.
Bob Kane screwed Bill Finger.

Marvel seems to be extremely bad with royalties. according to Ethan Van Sciver DC is actually pretty good paying creators. he got a pretty big pay check just from the brief appearance of Iron Heights Prison in the JL movie. on the flip side he also said he got like nothing for the female Angel he created from X-Men first Class

Damn shame an actor can make more for playing the character in one movie than the creator of the character will make for it in their life.

The person who made the character got paid for their work, back then they didn't think to include in the agreement to make money based on the appearance of the character so they shouldn't get any money. Its like selling something you don't think has much value, and when you find out the person you sold it to makes profit off it you want a cut, it makes no sense, you are wrong in this, very wrong, however they should put the royalties clause in their agreements now a days.

Look how long it took for Jack "king' Kirby to get even a title mention in any of the movies or shows.

SMFH it is what it is. That's the contract they signed at the time. It's the same way for example Marvel sold off character rights when they were going bankrupt. They could have just sold off the characters outright but instead they did deals to retain certain media streams of the character and even get them back fully if no work is being done with them.

Creators should get something, but unless they have good contracts, the company owns them and can do whatever they want with them. You get a creator credit on every tv/movie screen. I could live with that.

Speaking of Chavez why are people so pressed about her?

As much as I Want these people to be Credited and Compensated for their Own Creativity, I’m going to go on the unpopular quote from a Film pundit and say “It’s Not What You Deserved, It’s What You Negotiated”. The Marvel Creators need to realize that Marvel and Marvel Studios isn’t obligated to do anything on what you want them to do, they signed on that dotted line knowing full well that they’re “Work For Hire”.

This example is so resonatingly similar to like a Guy who built a House and sold the land to the New Owners but is later saying it’s my Home when he basically sold it to the New Owner

Didn't watch thr Video, but what aspect about America Chavez are people mad about now?

Watched the video. I mean I support creators, but these people signed a contract saying they did not own the characters and stories they created, but that marvel did.

Don't forget the big companies only care for the casual since they the casual doesn't who xyz is unless you do the Stan Lee cameo stuff but even then that means nothing except for the casual's where's cameo man.

I get where you're coming from but where should the line be drawn? Is art different than other creations made for employers! By this logic, my employer should pay me every time they reuse a PowerPoint template or training guide that I made.

Everyone is altruistic when it's not their money... Marvel employed these people to write. That was their job...Marvel owned the characters and the stories they wrote. They knew in advance from those contracts they would use the characters for tv, movies, animation, clothing, and merchandise. They were happy and contented in the begining just to work for Marvel. But once Marvel invested further in those characters and stories they wanted more. If Marvel pays them they set a precedent that jeopardizes the whole MCU because every writer would try to claim ownership which is more than creation. Once the MCU is torn apart I wonder how many people would want them to get paid then?

This is pathetic, they worked on contract basis. They got money for what they made for comics.

Now all of a sudden, those greedy bastards want royalties? Too bad! You should've mentioned something of the sort in the contact.

Why should people not accept it, Armin?
Why should people side with someone who knowingly signed the contract? It was their choice and they blew it.

Also true of scripts. You don't want to write scripts for studios. You want to write the book that they write the script from. And even then, you have to keep your eye on the publisher if you go that route. If you're writing for a paycheck, someone else probably owns the work

It’s unfortunate but they signed a contract and they got paid for whatever job they signed

It’s like if you hired a contractor to fix your house and after they are done you pay them and that’s it and then they are like hey I fixed your house pay me another grand

Of course you are gonna be like

No

I paid you for what I assigned you that’s it we are done

John campea explained it better

Artists are freelance they get hired and paid for what they got hired for and then they move on

Hope things get better tho
