My 2001 Ram 2500 has the 5.9L and it is the best. Plenty of power and I get 19-21 mpg. I will never give this one up. It has the best of the things i like. 6 speed manual, loud diesel noise., no annoying seat belt light or alarm, CD and cassette. Just what a 76 yr old guy needs.

In my opinion the Cummins 5.9, 24 valve combines the legendary durability of this engine with a touch of refinement. Been driving mine for almost nineteen years. The longer I own it, the more I appreciate and want to keep going. Just the best.

After 14 years running a one-man shop, I sold off all my modern crap and bought a '93 W250 with a Cummins & 5-speed. Couldn't be happier! I gladly gave up comfort, power, and handling / speed for RELIABILITY and EASY maintenance & repairs.

My neighbor used to haul 5th wheel campers from the east coast of the US to the west coast. It’s a 2003 3500 dodge with the 5.9. That motor had 1.6 million miles on it before he did a swap. The truck is still going today. I have two 5.9 s one with 326 thousand miles and one with 500 thousand miles.

A 1997 F series Super Duty (F450) with the 7.3 Powerstroke was the best truck I ever had hauling a 10 ft camper and pulling a 3 horse trailer, in the running engine I ever had and all the power needed, got the job done for over 15 years, no problems, with reg maintainence.

5.9, unlimited performance upgrades, makes it the king of the hill. Nothing else compares😊

No diesel engine with emissions should be on this list.

So basically consolidated diesel hit the pinnacle in 1984 when Tenneco and Cummins decided to engineer greatness. 3.9, 5.9, and 8.3s just seem to be everywhere, just working away, clocking up the hours. 2 stroke Detroits did a lot for America in the 60s and 70s, but Cummins sure left a big mark on diesel history.

I have a 2005 Cummins with 98000 miles. I will be driving it for a very long time. There is no way I will buy a new diesel with emissions on it. They are junk.

The Cummins 5.9 gets some bad press for oil leaks, noise, and some turbo issues, but in 40 years of truck leasing and medium duty sales, in my opinion is is one of the best engines ever produced. Cheap to maintain, cheaper to operate, NO electronics, and if it was in a proper application, I'd seen some at 400k miles still running strong!

Somebody didn’t do their research. The 5.9L cummins and 7.3L powerstrokr are 1 and 2. Which is what spot is up for debate.

I got my 2006 cummins 5.9 IL turbo diesel on may of that same year and today after 200k miles and still running strong and super reliable I can report that this engine is indeed the kind of all engines. T6 Rotella oil and Baldwin fuel filter is my to go for regular maintenance. This truck will ride me to retirement age for sure. Still original injectors and transmission!! 🤙🇺🇸Cummins 5.9 rules!!!
