Do we need nuclear energy against climate change? | Christian von Hirschhausen | TEDxTUBerlin

Nuclear power was a major discovery of the 20th century. Today, it continues to play an important role regarding the future energy mix, climate change, innovation, and proliferation. In fact, we observe an increasing interest in nuclear power to combat fossil fuel emissions and climate change. Bill Gates, Microsoft Co-founder and philanthropist, is investing in so-called “new” nuclear technology, and Frank Thelen, a well-know German VC investor, consiers nuclear power sustainable and a key for decarbonization. So do some countries, like China, Russia, and the United States. Even the Fridays-For-Future movement (FFF) is engaged in this discussion.

Nuclear power is many fold climate friendly than any fossil fuel energy sources. On a time scale of 15 plus years, nuclear energy is cheaper than fossil energy sources. Initial investment in nuclear energy is more than building fossil fuel power plants. General public has unreasonable negative opinion of the nuclear power. Nuclear power plants are several folds safer than fossil power plants. For example, deaths from per kWh energy produced through nuclear power are the least.

Wow, so much cherry picking and misdirection in one video. He tries to come off in the beginning as pro-nuke, but then quickly morphs into an anti-nuke stance full of misinformation. For instance he kept saying "nuclear energy is very dangerous" but fails to mention that nuclear energy is the safest.

Biased and incorrect in many place:

- Nuclear is the safest form of renewable energy per mw/h

- Development of new SMR’s at a much cheaper cost, can be retrofitted into old coal plants and stacked depending on demand

- Nuclear waste is actually the only highly regulated renewable waste and is stored safely in facilities distant from highly populated areas, whereas wind and solar waste ends in landfills in developing countries with many toxic elements present in them also

What can you expect from the poorly informed and biased Germans 🙄…

It’s not about making money it’s about having a reliable and safe source of power 24/7/365

Too biased and does not surprise considering Germany policy on Nuclear power.

This is nonsense. Nuclear is cheap, carbon free and quantifiably the safest form of energy. It’s exactly what we need right now. Even Obama said so in his original energy plan to get off of fossil fuels

Nuclear is the best, my proppsal is to put all your nuclear waste to Finland since we have a lot of underground space for that and nobody lives here anyway. Stop hiding your fatal errors germany!

Is there any data to support his claim that nuclear power is 4x more expensive than solar?

It's funny how people say HE is biased, while you clearly all are lmao and dont wanna listen to his points.

Any sources for the claims: nuclear accidents happen everyday, people illegally trade radioactive material daily?

Where are you going to stick the renewable solar, Germany or Morocco? Not sure this all adds up.

The title of this talk (or just the video) is completely off. He never talks about if we need nuclear energy against climate change but only about the history and negative aspects of nuclear power.
Name it better "A Short History of Nuclear Energy".

That wow at the start gives him away. I respect his opinion but he is misleading and misrepresenting facts. The comments make me hopeful.

This guy is so biased and the opposite of objective, I wonder how he got his professorship. Says a lot about german Zeitgeist
