Requiem Improvisation for my Dad

My dad was killed by Covid-19. He died on Ash Wednesday, March 2, 2022 and I buried him earlier today, Thursday March 10th. His name was Robert, but I never heard him introduce himself as anything other than "Bob".

I wish I was a better pianist. I wish I could play something that would begin to do honor his life of nearly 97 years. They buried him with military honors...a Twenty-One Gun Salute followed by a short Christian burial service. And that was it.

I met at an outdoor venue with some friends and family afterwards. And the world just kept on turning, barely registering his passing. Vladimir Putin killed a bunch of people that same day. Many people went on with their lives as if Covid was a thing better ignored than ended. I returned home angry, despondent and spent.

At the end of the day, I stopped off at my piano and these are the sounds that came forth. Nothing written down and no practice...this was captured in real time by my "PianoCam". I know it's not very good, but it certainly is "real", and it did seem to capture some part of the day's feelings, so I decided to publish it up. I cut it down if only to spare us all from the original 20 minutes of footage.

Leave a comment if you care...perhaps a prayer for those of us who must now find reason to continue on without him in our lives.

That's very beautiful, Mark. Dad would have loved it.
