Can I substitute ingredients when making cocktails?

Whilst I did say "it will always work", don't take me too literally.. if you change whiskey for another whiskey, the cocktail will still work. London dry gin for a contemporary gin, it will work... London dry gin for Sloe gin (which is a fruit macerated and sweetened gin) on the other hand, might need some tweaking.

Introducing agave in place of simple syrup, it will work but you'll need to tweak the measurements. You get the idea :-)

My point is - experiment... tweak... taste and learn about the ingredients.

Hot swapping is fun, You can have so many great experiments that way.

Of course you can. The real question is "should you?"

The answer is still yes XP

What would you swap pineapple for for people that are allergic to it

Fun fact : a while ago I wanted to try your Tango (bellagio) recipe and as a non-native English person, I misunderstood grapefruit and I put some grape juice with the gin and the passoa.
The result is astonishing if you delete the simple syrup!!

Hey Steve
While I sit in my shed bar watching you I had a moment
Try this out quite sweet
25ml orange Jamison whiskey
20 ml lime
20 ml simple syrup but I used golden granulated
Not shaken
Love to know your thoughts

I substitute all the time. I’m not going to let an ingredient stop me from a good time.

Imagine the glass just shatters as you use a diffrent liqour in protest of improper drink mixology.

I’ll often sub Aperol for Campari when I make Negronis. Especially if the person I’m making it for prefers it a little sweeter.

What would be a good alternative to creme de Violette if I can't find any :'(

My most common substitute is not two different ingredients. Mine is substituting curacao for itself. I can't find orange curacao at any of the stores near me. So if a recipe calls for it, I use the easy to find blue curacao. The drink ends up a completely different colour (sometimes quite an interesting one) but tastes the same. For a bit of fun I suggest you too, substitute orange curacao for blue. :)

As different ingredients go, I'll substitute amaretto for when I run out of Orgeat.

How come you only have 2 threefold gins on your shelf? Don't you have the whole range????

Swapped the sweetener for tears of anger from my jackass boss. Never had anything sweeter.
