Most of the "gold" owned is electronic gold in the form of ETFs and such. Come a crash and many will discover that they either do not own any real gold or that the gold they "own" is also claimed by many, many others who think they own it. The crash will be in the electronic gold market while the physical gold market will thrive.

Gold is protection against a major financial downturn. At least you have something to pay off or use to buy something better than having nothing at all. It is a hedge and it is fulfilling that purpose.
