You do a good job at pointing out the ridiculousness of it all. It's breathtaking how anyone with a modicum of reason could believe it.

“It is hate speech to call out our totally racist scriptures that God changed His mind about in 1978.”

Did you meet my dad? Lmao!

One of my childhood friends was Mormon (Alberta…huge group there). Her father gave my dad a few books so he could be “educated”. He lived to regret that. My dad loved information and was a sponge.
I would go for sleepovers at the friends house and was quickly invited to their nightly scripture time. And I was just as quickly banned. It seems that asking questions was not allowed. Especially the dreaded “why?”
In his retirement my dad loved when missionaries came to the door. He looked forward to long conversations about theology. Though he preferred it with the JW as he always felt bad doing it to young Mormon kids who already could have a tough time with missionary.
For many of the teens he would offer them food and drink and just general talk to pass the time and give them a rest.
He was put on a black list for the JW (who would cross the street to avoid our house). But the young Mormon missionaries still came and he enjoyed talking about life with them and they enjoyed him. The friends father would have long debates with my dad and sounded just like this.
But I learned from him the best way to deal with missionaries is to know what they are talking about.

I like my Mom's reply. She simply tells them, Would you like to know the difference between my God and Yours? They always say yes. She says to them, well my God never needs to knock. And she closes the door.

I'm picturing the Padme meme. "Oh this story is a metaphor...it's a metaphor right"

As a gay person that’s not Mormon anymore—but served a Mormon mission—I can definitely confirm that those stories are ridiculous. But also, in the mission, you’re not allowed to read, listen to, or do anything that’s not related to the scriptures, so hearing any other opinion felt like a different language—arguing with missionaries is unproductive. We didn’t even have the internet. I got really suicidal because I felt trapped in an endless bubble, and people would come up to me and make fun of me, and it just made my depression worse. Yes, Mormonism is stupid, but don’t attack these kids that are likely extremely depressed and far from home.

Joe decoded the Abraham scrolls but when the real translators interpreted the scrolls, they were common funerary rites🤣

I'm a huge fan of this I dated a lds girl we met working on a cruise ship ended up getting super serious, she brought me home to her folks house in between tours and they were super Mormon and super racist and hated me poking holes in there book. They hate logic and they were months behind on bills but gave tithe before they paid rent and their landlord was a fucking elder. So fucking culty.

I met some mormons once. Two really nice women, but they were super shady in their mission practices. They came to a university campus where they dressed like students with backpacks on and everything so they could freely walk in the buildings without security tossing them out. My Jewish friend said they were harmless and I just looked at her. In my mind I thought, "if anyone is disguising themselves as a student to recruit people, they're intentions are clearly malicious."

I got a free book from them and gave them an alternative email. Funny they wanted my phone number really badly, but when I offered my email they were hesitant. Apparently email is not a thing for the mormons 😂.

I used to enjoy having elders knock at my door because I sometimes knew more about their doctrine than they did. I wasn't obnoxious. I just asked questions about their beliefs. Unfortunately, I ended up in their "no visit list" after a young man asked too many questions and got sent back home. I still pray for him.

Back in Madrid my mom’s friend had the most Spanish response to missionaries:
“How am I supposed to believe in your god when I don’t even believe in my own? Which btw is the correct one”

This is akin to how my mum delt with mormon missionaries.
First she asked for a copy of their book, so that she could read it for herself, and asked them to come back in a couple of weeks.
When they returned she invited them in for some tea and a discussion. After she pointed out several contradictions, as well as cross referencing the bible (including in the original Greek), they eventually left.
There has been no more mormon missionaries to my mothers house after that, even when they visit neighbors.

My mum doesn't actually understand old Greek, but got some help from her father. He was a priest of the old school, and was proficient in old greek, aramaic and Latin, as well as other languages. He was not opposed to help debunk some false profets.

I had my bishop come up and squeeze my muscles and then every Sunday until the day I left, someone came up to squeeze my muscles, I felt like I was in the movie "get out" by Jordan Peele

Fun fact, scholars of the Ancient Near East/Middle think that the structure called the Tower of Babel by the Israelites actually existed! Except it was a Babylonian ziggurat/temple and the myth surrounding the “tower” was to explain all of the new languages that the Israelites heard during the Babylonian Exile. (Initially, they were hill-dwelling people in basically bum-fuck nowhere, but were rounded up and deported by the Assyrians for rebelling against them. They were deported into the Assyrian empire, which was large and vast for its time, as well as extremely multi-ethnic and multi-lingual, which would have confused the Israelites, who didn’t have much contact with groups outside their immediate area.)

ex mormon here, and FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT THE "CURSE OF BLACKNESS" PART 😭 that part is possibly the worst section of the whole document. I remember when the teacher talked about it in seminary (basically church but not church and it's during school hours) and me n my friends just looked at eachother like.. 💀💀

The Laing family interview is one of my favorites, (recently just watched it again), especially your question about the barges and everyone's immediate reaction. Classic!!

Reminds me of that classic scene in the BBC tv show black books. He's so desperate to procrastinate his taxes he lets missionaries into his house and they're utterly shocked, confused and have no idea what to do when someone WANTS to talk to them 😅
