let those suckers sit on the rocks on a sunny day or two and you'll be good to go. more temper will help but let ALL the moisture dry out. make more while you wait. good news is it means your burnishing was good enough to seal the moisture in.

This is way bigger of a development than people may realize, pottery is a rich material science and art, and it’s carried a piece of the daily life of humanity for centuries. Pottery itself is nothing new, but the prospect of abundant examples of refining nature through art and information online and globally together is like treasure. Thank you for enshrining it online, to keep it on our minds. You’re a gem❤️‍🔥

Back in art class we were told to dry our pieces at least a week to prevent this happening. They should be uniform in color and light in color, indicating no moisture is present.

Air and moisture pockets... You can take your clay as a ball, and throw throw throw it back and forth, in your hands, at a flat surface, forcing out air. As others mentioned, letting it sit for a while will help as well. Nice work!!!

Someone called this a failure 🤔. Negative. It's a learning opportunity 😊. Great job. Keep going.

Very keen to give this a go!

I do recommend not building a fire on river rocks though, the moisture in the rock can make them explode from personal experience.

Burnishing: Technical term when smoothing with stone similar to native southwest pottery. Thanks!!!😊❤

The problem was, you had moisture in the clay. You wanna let it slowly dry for a couple days before firing it. The last comment said, put it in the sun, but I think that would cause it to try too fast resulting in cracks as well. It needs to be “bone dry“ before firing.

You are one of the good ones. Simple projects that are feasable and realistic, done in a calm manner and not shying away from showing the mistakes. That's how you make content.

You gotta let the clay dry longer.
I did some open fire firing with stoneware clay years ago. I had the exact same problem at first

That is so cool! When I was a kid we used to make little clay flower pots and put a few wildflowers in it and sold then for like .10 and .25 cents. 😂

Hey, if I ever get stranded this will be the technique I will use to make bows and cups! I love it!

I like how you show your failures it means that you are real.. but I know a few things as well excellent tutorials ❤

that's why you need to knead the clay before molding it to remove some air pocket that causes it to shatter

This is so cool I want to give it a try now!

1000 years from now after a worldwide catastrophe: "and here children we have some primitive pottery made by a prehistoric civilization"

I live in a place that has some really great pottery and you're making me want to go out and play with mud and see if I can figure it out.

After seeing primitive technologies do it. I tried doing it myself when I was younger.
I only ever had a few break on me but it seemed I had the best results when I let them dry over the course of a full 2 days. Sometimes I'd go longer because I only was able to fire them on the weekends

The burnishing traps moisture in the clay, and leads to uneven density, particularly directly under the smoothed-out surface. If you're going to burnish like that, the pot will need to be really well dried, probably for days, if you want to be able to absolutely avoid chipping like that during firing
