Happy National Lighthouse Day | August 7 | Shiny Beacon of Hope
Показать описание
Happy National Lighthouse Day! It's August 7th and that means Kevin Fleenor narrates another American National Holiday 3-minute video. Today, we celebrate the lighthouse, one of our most beautiful and useful creations. If you get a chance, everyone would love to see your local lighthouse - post your pictures on social media with the hashtag #LighthouseDay.
Historically, a lighthouse is a tower that has been designed to emit a strong beam of light from a system of lamps and lenses to serve as a beacon for navigational aid for maritime pilots of the sea. They mark dangerous coastlines, reefs, and rocks, but they also mark safe entries to harbors.

Did you know?
It was way back in Ancient Egypt that the Pharaoh build the Lighthouse of Alexandria. It's over 300 feet tall and one of the Seven Wonders as the Ancient World.
In Spain, the Tower of Hercules was built in the year 100 AD. The Romans, who conquered this region, believed it to be, in a figurative sense, the end of the Earth.
If you're not watching the video, you're missing some cool facts right now.
The Eddystone Rocks were a major shipwreck hazard for mariners sailing through the English Channel. The first lighthouse built there was an octagonal wooden structure, anchored by 12 iron stanchions secured in the rock, and was built by Henry Winstanley from 1696 to 1698. His lighthouse was the first tower in the world to have been fully exposed to the open sea.
---
In 1789, the brand new government of the United States of America passed an act securing the protection of all lighthouses under federal support. On August 7, 1989, President Bush commemorated the Lighthouse Act by making this day National Lighthouse Day!
A great way to celebrate the day, besides watching this video, is to go visit a lighthouse yourself! You'd be surprised where one might pop up, closer than you think. American lighthouses can be found from Sandy Hook, New Jersey all the way to Point Fermin in Los Angeles, California.
