If I understand your question correctly, you're asking if we are allowed to leave negative 1. The answer is no. Every entry in the original matrix must be turned to either a zero or a (positive) 1. Negatives are not allowed. The order at which you do the operations is entirely up to you. There are some general rules and guidelines as to what order to do your elementary row operations, but you can arrive at the answer by traveling down a number of different avenues. No disrespect if this isnt the way you mean to teach, but i really like being taught like a 10 year old. My lecture is just so terrible, incredibly intellegent guy and a really nice bloke but my god in lectures i struggle to follow him saying hello let alone teaching us, this was a sweet video cheers :D x
