The Boston Bruins Weren't Supposed to Be This Good...

The Boston Bruins are coming off of the best regular season of any team in NHL history. They lost Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci to retirement and also lost Dmitry Orlov, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Taylor Hall to free agency. They were supposed to take a step back this year. But, so far, they have picked up right where they left off last year and are 2nd league wide in the standings with just one regulation loss. Can they sustain this excellence? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I’m glad they held onto Ullmark and Swayman. They made some good moves in the off-season too

JVR was a great signing and I really hope that he comes back for a few more years. He's a veteran player and I feel like he can help this Bruins team to the SC.

Been a Bruins fan my whole life. Marchand may be called a rat by every other fan base but that is his job! To throw others off of their game!! Off the ice though... he is a great guy & father! I'm glad to see that he is wearing the well deserved C on his jersey! He has earned it! Keep up the great job Bs!

Hall was traded, we didn't lose him to free agency.

How to win in the NHL:
1) good, consistent goaltending
2) a commitment to team defense
3) a balanced scoring attack
4) leadership

Consider this. Of last 30 Stanley Cup champions (1993 - 2023) only three teams have had a player on their roster who scored 50 goals the year the team won the Stanley Cup (Graves in
'94 and Sakic in '96 and '01). No Stanley Cup champion since the 2004 lockout has had a player score 50 goals the year it won the Cup. In the salary cap era, well-balanced teams that play defense win Cups. The Bruins figured this out a while ago. Smart organization.

I mean a lot of the players they „lost“ were deadline trades when they were already on pace for the regular season record. Bergy and krejci also missed/ took a break in a lot of games. Krejci especially was great, but he didn‘t play a lot. Bergy/hall were the two only big losses for depth. Hall missed a lot of games too. With poitras stepping up and getting some more depth in free agency, they are basically a 1C away from the record-setting roster in quality

Honestly, we’re really privileged. One of if not THE BEST right wing in the league right now, a solid top pair with very good defensive depth, Zacha starting to perform like a 6th overall pick as soon as he gets handed to us(granted, playing with Pastrnak will do that to you) of course the Goalie Tandem being Arguably the best(arguably in the sense of it could be argued otherwise, but relatively they are generally considered the best) and apparently Jim Montgomery is good at his job.

I'd argue that middling on offense (14th in goals scored per game), and elite on defense (tops in GA/gm, currently #1) is exactly what we expected. It is a suprise that these levels would manifest in this good a record, but a solid record is not a surprise.

Here's the point. The Bruins just need to get into the Playoffs and then go nuts. And you forgot to mention the huge pool of talent that they have been able to call on from Providence to fill out there team when someone gets injured or someone gets suspended. The last two weeks, showed us that pool and it's pretty freaking good.

JVR & Poitras have been some of the biggest surprises for the Bruins. JVR was just meant a be a cheap signing after dumbing Taylor Hall, and I don't think anyone Expecyed Poitras to be this good this soon.

And of course Ullmark & Swayman continue to be the be Goalie duo in the league.

The kids have speed and talent and they still have Lysell waiting in the wings.

It was the same narrative before the record breaking season as well lol. I saw some saying they should tank this year…like yea a team with two of the best goaltenders in the league, a Rocket Richard winner, and the #1 defense should tank 😂 wishful thinking from them

They started the off-season pretty much in the same place as last year and wouldn’t you know, they’re off to a similar start
