If the woods you cut off is actually hang either between two or one stand support, it is possible to get a kick back since the between them are pushed to each other making it more stress to the circular saw which result a kick back

Does he have the piece resting on something on both sides.? If you have the piece that being cut off hanging off the sawhorse you shouldn’t be getting any kick back. But if you have it propped up on both sides the blade will bind every time
