5 Whys Everything (2024)
Показать описание
The idea of 5 whys is you repeatedly ask WHY 5 times until you get to the root cause.
5 whys is a good way to help people think about problems in a different view.
Sometimes I even encourage people to ask 5 whys to get them thinking outside of their box.
And on a side note, there are a couple of other ways to look at problems in a different view too, like
1) a fishbone diagram OR
2) a cause and effect diagram
Leave a comment if you’d like to hear my experience with those a different day.
But anyway, back to 5 whys…
don’t get me wrong, when someone hands me a project they’ve been working on, and THAT PERSON has already asked 5 whys, I’m very happy to look at it! But I’ve never had to ask 5 whys myself.
And part of the reason I’ve never done it is because I work projects I know nothing about. I’m never the expert in the field. I’m the professional problem solver.
Lightning Problem Solving Methods are so powerful that it actually helps when the problem solver has no previous knowledge of the actual problem.
So, how do you ask the right questions to solve a problem lightning fast?
The whole point of problem-solving is to find contrast. You always want to compare good to bad.
When you find contrast, start forming your questions using a question diagram.
After you have the question diagram, you solve the problem by comparing the good stuff to the bad stuff.
How about you? Has “5 whys” ever helped you solve a problem quickly? I’d love to hear if it has! Tell me about it in the comments below.
Because in my experience, smart managers only ask inexperienced employees to ask 5 whys.
But there are usually better questions to ask if you want the problem solved yesterday.
