The Atheist Experience 21.31 for August 6, 2017 with Matt Dillahunty and John Iacoletti.

Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279

We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.

YouTube comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of YouTube comment sections, in our experience.

We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?

The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.

The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Matt: "If you say 'context' one more time, I'm hanging up."
Caller: Describes context without using the word "context."

I absolutely love when Matt holds their feet to the fire and will not let them wiggle out. It's my favorite thing to watch because the theist starts realizing they're wrong AND try to still argue and they get confused, naturally.

Matt tried so hard to guide this caller and let him figure out his morality was better than his holy book, but he just couldnt get it. The damage religion does is so insidious

Philosophy has questions that may never be answered, religion has answers that may never be questioned

This is a major reason I left religion behind: the constant need to waffle, obfuscate, and rationalize. It gets to a point when you realize you've been lying to yourself.

It seems christians need to be asked a question eleven times to actually hear the question.

I don't rape, plunder, or steal and yet have been a carefree atheist since the day I was born 85 years ago, even while SURROUNDED by "good gob-fearing christians'' my entire adventurous life.
Something musta gone wrong...

"i didn't grow up christian but i think i am a good person"
"i am not saying you can't be good, that is not what i am saying"

Morality is not absolute. Never has been, never will be.

When I was a christian, the pastors taught us that we can basically disregard the verses about slavery because that was the old covenant, but they put a lot of emphasis on the 10 commandments. so really they would just pick and choose what to hang onto and what to ignore.

Fred Astaire himself would have been so very proud of Joel's tap dance. Lol.

A Christian dancing around what he knows is true. I felt embarrassed for him.

Does being an atheist make a person a good pastry chef?
Does being an atheist prevent a person from being a good pastry chef?
I hope I have adequately demonstrated the absurdity of the caller's question!

It's seems odd that a grown man (or woman) hasn't yet worked out from where we get our morals.
Very odd indeed. I remember the day I learned. I was in my mother's kitchen and I was being naughty. She said that if I didn't behave, I would not get any ice cream nor watch Doctor Who.
I've behaved ever since. I still enjoy ice cream and Doctor Who.

This could be my all time favorite AXP video. So much is illustrated in this one call.
