"Do not see the world as it should be, see it as it is." I wish I had learned and accepted that earlier in life. We tend to be idealistic in our younger years and wish that things operated in the "correct" manner. Stop looking at the world in terms of how you think it should work and work within the framework of how it IS.

The interesting thing about Machiavelli is he preferred to use history rather than lofty ideals as some philosophers might do in his theories. History gives examples and he studied these examples to make his arguments. He proved the genuine value of history and showed how it can be used.

I got a D in a test about Machiavelli in high school. the teacher was pissed with me because I kept writing MaCChiavelli with a double C instead of just one. Later I found out that Machiavelli himself wrote his name MaCChiavelli.

One thing we should add, is that one should never, ever, ever be hated. One can be feared, but that fear must breed respect begrudging or not. Fear prevents actions against you. However, hatred and fear breeds rebellion as the penalty for resisting you is seen as preferable to life under you.

Ensure that whatever action you take, you never breed hatred. Never be arbitrary, never act overtly unjust, never take any action which can result in you being hated, and if you have to, always ensure that someone else takes the fall for it.

Though act cautiously, as if anyone figures out, those who work under you, may also turn to hate you. Basically, don't act dirty just for the sake of acting dirty.

Heros see the world as they should be, villains see it the way it truly is. This is why the bad guy makes so much sense as an adult.

Still so true. I love the part about balancing nobility off the people. Basically states the art of worker vs business politics in modern age.

I could've learned from this guy. I tried to tackle inefficiency and bullying in my new management role. Boy was I wrong and while I may won the hearts of some of staff, management was surprisingly opposing even though they asked in the interview how I would resolve their issues. If I just kept to myself and pretty much did nothing, I would've made it through the ranks but I wanted to be a hero for someone. I also learned to never ever change anything when new even if the majority seems to agree with you. It's a dog world out there. The managers that knew how to lie and play the popularity game made it sad but goes along what this guy is saying: play the game that is being played even if it's wrong otherwise you won't
I recall asking my son to always share and let other kids go in front of him when they were trying to get to the front of the line. My dad told me to stop as no one else does. Play nice only if others do

In my opinion he could foresee the deceits, manipulation, controlling and wicked tactics of people. In conclusion, he taught how to be strong and not be fooled in life

Yes, Machiavelli advised that upon conquering a principality, the victorious prince should: 1) ensure that the family of the principality's former rulers are entirely "extinct", 2) avoid changes to their traditions, customs and laws and 3) don't mess with their taxes!!!

"The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions"
is a contrapositive statement of "The End justifies the Means"
If you get the result that you wanted, the means were correct.
If you never get the result that you wanted, that proves the means were bad.
