Out of system drill Digging, setting, hitting

This live-action drill, introduced by Tod Mattox of The Bishop’s School, focuses on transitioning off a dig. All players get digging, setting and hitting reps, and an eye-work component for middle blockers can also be added.

Group players in these five stations:

• Tossers at the net
• Two lines of diggers and setters in the middle of the court, side by side
• Attackers on the left
• Attackers on the right

The drill starts with a tosser “bowling” a ball to a player at the front of one of the digger/setter lines. That player digs, and the player at the front of the other digger/setter line sets to the side they are facing. The outside hitter attacks.

Players in the digging/setting lines get two touches before moving to a different station – a dig first, then a set. (After setting, players cover the hitter.)

To add an extra wrinkle to this drill, put a middle blocker at the net and have him/her read where the set is going, then take a couple of shuffle steps in that direction so they are in a better position to get to their blocking spot. This is good eye-work practice.

I like this coach but he does creep me out. This is a great drill...I maybe the only one that noticed...the difference in hustle between the ladies and the boys. The ladies hustle, boys historically in court sports are lazy. Especially Volleyball, they hate drills. Hence men's volleyball has little skill and boring
