That's nice when you play rich ass courses with perfect fairways and fringes, but when you play dog tracks with awful lies, mud pits, and spotty fringe and greens with a mix of dirt and grass spots....

Putting ain't an option chief

He's right if you are just trying to get the best score, but when you are out with the boys you want to have fun and hit a cool looking shot. Your actual score isnt that big a deal.

bump and run with the P wedge is my play. Thats how I got so good at up and downs. I have no feel with a putter with how itll get over the taller fringe grass. Plus it checks up a little bit which I like.

Great advice. Also use an 8 iron around the green as well. Golf has such a small margin of error and I like to improve my chances.

Whenever I putt from the fringe ALL distance control goes out the window, when I chip from the fringe I don’t think I can remember the last time I 3 putted. Either way is a 2 putt and I usually get closer with a chip.

I’ve been using irons (7-9) off the green and it has dramatically improved my short game. Just a nice simple putting stroke does it. It’s a shot I’m confident with as I don’t feel like I’m gonna duff it. 56 and 60 are the devil for me on short chips.

The fringes on the courses the pros play are just a little better/easier then the courses us peasants play

If you’re not playing for money break out the wedge. Only way to get better is by using it.

Depending on the lie and ground to cover, I use a hybrid, blade a SW, a wedge or a Texas wedge aka putter.

My first ever short game lesson was started with the comment, “The lower to the ground the ball is after you hit it the less likely you’ll make a mistake and blade it across the green!” That advice has taken me from a 20 to 11 handicap! More putting and more bump and runs with PW or even hybrids for really poor lies vs trying to chip with sand and lob wedges.

Good point. Simple takeaway: if you CAN putt, putt. Regardless of where you are.

I'm a single handicap and I putt from off the green whenever the opportunity presents itself. The courses I play are rough around the edges so the lie is usually questionable. Putting gives me the best chance and I've sunk my fair share of putts from the apron and beyond.

I use a chipper off the green, the best of both worlds

I did this recently, about 8” in the rough into a downhill green… stopped it 10” from the hole for tap-in par. With a chip, I might have easily double bogeyed.

I got a birdie putting 40ft out from the rough next to the fairway haha, one of my best shots

Really a mindset thing, chip to make putt to get it close

15 handicap should spend 75% of their practice time from 50 yards an in, including putting. 15% of their their time developing a rock solid tee ball and the last 10% working on solid ball striking with irons, hybrids and/or fairway woods.

Most 15+ handicaps I play with throw away a minimum of 5 strokes around from 50 yards and in.

“If they just putt the worst they’re gonna get is a 3”
