This is my favorite Gabrielle Aplin song. I used to hate the lyrics of chorus. But I learned that if your heart has been broken before. It’s not easy to fall in love again with someone else. This is a song about taking your relationship slow. No one should ever easily say he or she loves someone. It is a strong word and it might hurt someone deep in the end when the relationship goes wrong. My heart has been broken before but I hope someday I can “say it back”

This song represents, to me, the fact that "I love you" has a lot of weight and meaning, it can't be said just like that. It's also about being scared of being hurt. Things take time and trust takes patience and nurturing.

this is the most relatable song ever.. its a sad state to be in tbh, but it usually comes from a place of self preservation- instincts kick in, and openly loving someone requires making yourself vulnerable to the other person... for a lot of us, its thanks to (oftentimes) unresolved childhood traumas
