The good thing is that no matter if a girl, man or woman, we all got equally traumatized, and that is what matters.

The anime looked me in the face, laughed, shot me in the foot, healed it and then shot me again; to death this time.

The thing I love the most of Banana Fish is that it's fandom is in the credits of "Mr. Loverman" because if it wasn't for the Banana Fish fandom the song wouldn't be that popular

Is he TRYING to hurt his viewers? Talking about and recommending banafish without fisrt paying for his victims therapy is a crime.

Of course the show with a name like “banana fish” would essentially be focused on the mafia

Another thing is that this is probably the only anime with sooo many DIFFICULT THEMES & did not exaggerate or make fun of or brush off the topics. Many bl use them as troupes for tragic backstory many isekai does them for comedy & plot progression. But its the only show that has sincere way of dealing with those heavy themes.
No metaphor is used.
Non fantasy setting makes the emotions & stakes feel real

Banana Fish is one of those shows that when you finish it you just have to sit there and let it sink it. It’s so good. One of my all time favorite anime. Not-so-fun Fun Fact: Akimi Yoshida, the author, briefly considered changing the ending after River Phoenix (Ash’s main inspiration) died, as she worried it would seem insensitive. However, she decides against the change, as she had it planned since the beginning. An actual fun fact: the late Ryuichi Sakamoto owned the live-action film rights to Banana Fish, but to public knowledge production never started (likely due to River’s death).

Banana Fish honestly helped SO MUCH with the homophobia inside the anime/manga community, at least in the groups I've been inserted. I say this bc I personally saw some people change their minds about gay relationships after watching it, literally saw homophobes bawling their eyes out

I first read Banana Fish when I was 16 and now I'm in my 30s but the story still stuck with me through the years.

You won't be disappointed but you'll be traumatised tho. The tears didn't stop for me for a whole hour

Arguably the most revolutionary shoujo is the Rose of Versailles. I still see it referenced in anime coming out today

I remember watching and finishing it a few years ago, and I can say no anime has ever made me feel the way banana fish did. I was ugly crying by the end. It’s one of the best I’ve ever watched.
