South Africa: Election Campaign Ends, Ramaphosa & ANC Face Biggest Test | Firstpost Africa

In a historic election on May 29, South Africa could witness the biggest political shift since the end of apartheid in 1994. Over the weekend, all political parties went full throttle as election campaigning came to a close. President Cyril Ramaphosa held his last giant rally at the FNB stadium in Soweto. While opinion polls say the ANC will lose its majority for the first time since Nelson Mandela led it to victory in 1994, Ramaphosa declared that the party was poised for a decisive win. Former president Jacob Zuma mounted an 11th-hour assault on the ANC's grip on power. Democratic Party leader John Steenhuisen also addressed a massive rally and urged voters to back his party to avoid a "doomsday" scenario of the ANC forming a coalition with radical parties.
