... this problem models dS as negative -dS, this should be due to the right hand rule flux direction determined by the way dl "spins" your thumb direction is essentially the curl and dS direction through the surface that we want. (pinky of rt hand on the dl arrow around the circle rim, follow the spin direction, and thumb is flux/dS direction).

You could also re-try this problem with the half sphere on top of the XY plane (0<theta<pi/2) and the same dl direction, and you should still get 48=48, and there dS is modeled as positive +dS.
