Something awesome I realised about this was to do with the names.

Mars is the Roman God of War.
Phobos is the Greek God of Fear.
Deimos is the Greek God of Terror.

Where War goes; Fear and Terror follow.

QUICK CORRECTION: We said in the video that Jupiters gravity probably "pushed" the asteroids out of the Asteroid Belt. The wording was pretty bad and lots of you got confused. What we meant was that Jupiters huge gravity interfered with the orbit of the asteroid belt and consequently slingshot some asteroids out of it. And by chance Mars was at the right place on the right time to "catch" them (meaning they couldn't escape Mars' gravity and started to orbit it). Gravity can't "push" something like we animated it in the video – sorry we didn't make this clear enough!

I hope Mars can catch a new moon. He deserves a friend.

The idea that Mars may have a ring one day makes me feel oddly happy. I think planetary rings are one of the coolest features a planet can have even if it's thin or dangerous. Not having a ring and suddenly developing one out of a moon you couldn't keep anyways is kind of like magically growing wings imo

Deimos's gravity is so weak that you could achieve escape velocity with a BMX bike and a ramp.

Mars' moons sound like my love life, it'll either come crashing into me or it'll leave me forever. God I love science.

Mars moons are shaped like potatoes that makes sense for the plot of the Martian.

The music in these videos is wonderful. Combined with the soothing, deep narrator's voice it makes for a very enjoyable and interesting educational video regardless of the content.

Mars has enough elongated craters near the equator to suggest the planet is the cosmic equivalent of a serial killer. It's been estimated that up to about two hundreds of asteroids that the planet had previously captured as moons ended up smashing themselves to bits on its surface.

Fun Fact:
Deimos is the personification of terror Greek mythology. He was a son of Ares (in greek "Άρης" is the planet Mars) and Aphrodite, and the twin brother of Phobos. Phobos means "fear" in greek.

Four years later and I still love these Moon May videos so much. It's what got me into Kurzgesagt and eventually my husband as well. Now we look forward to each video and wait to watch them together <3

Mars: I got my moons when Jupiter pushed them to me from the Asteroid Belt!
Neptune: That’s nothing, I got Triton from the Kuiper Belt myself!
???: AMATEURS.
Mars: What was that, punk?
Earth: AMATEURS.

So you're telling me that if Phobos gets close, then mars will...
Rip and tear?

God, I love doom.
