Usually a Sprint is pre - planned (3 sprints ahead). So even if my PO is on leave for a week I would still have some user stories that he/she might have already prioritized. Taking that in account I as a Scrum Master can still conduct my sprint planning (play planning poker) with the user stories which were already prioritized by PO before going on leave. Once he is back I can inform him that these are all the stories that we are taking into consideration and if there is any re-prioritization required for a certain user story. Please provide feedback, since I am new to Scrum Master

As a Scrum Master, SM has to wear a hat of PO and conduct Sprint Planning and Review sessions and try to achieve Sprint Goal

In my projects thru backlog refinement meetings, making sure that next three sprints worth product backlog items kept ready with its user stories, prioritization and estimation. There is weekly meeting for backlog grooming and team pull them into sprint backlog and they start with new sprint.

PO is on leave, but not the sprint here..
Option 1 : When he is on Planned leave
Now as a backup plan, he might arrange another stakeholder on his behalf to run the business continuity. Now here decisions play a vital role, since there could be scope creep (chances) or any other underlying factor can be built when the actual PO is on leave for a long time.
SM should be more vigilant towards the planning and sprint review. On the other side, the onsite team stakeholders also be effectively participate by providing valuable information if necessary. Option 2: Unplanned
Consider today is your sprint review and PO is on unexpected leave, the SM should record the session and keynotes during the sprint review/planning and can cascade the same to PO and once he is back, he can suggest any changes.

Leaves are inevitable; can be exigency or a planned vacation.

Sudden exigencies, then

A ) proxy PO ( BA ) can take care of the product owner sessions. This might not be the best but we engage in Shapers Team who help in story refinement for Planning sessions to take a lead.

B) Engage Customers to take care of the planning and demo sessions. As after PO they are the best guiding people.

If it's a planned leave then
Try rearranging the sessions. SM should have a leave calendar handy of team and PO. This is generally looked during the Sprint planning session

That happened to me before as a matter of fact. What I did was, before the Sprint planning session, I looked into the product backlog and looked onto all the stories that was groomed, priorities and estimated ready to be pulled into the new sprint. Then, during the spring planning with the Dev team and discussed which stories we're adding to the sprint and then they assigned themselves the user stories they will be committed to and then we elaborate the sprint goals and then we start our sprint.

Normally the PO does reorder the backlog with the highest priority item on the top by himself of with the help of his or her team. In case of PO being not reachable the team picks the top items of the backlog along with the spill over and one PI item that was identified in the last retro as part of the sprint planning to initiate the next sprint

Ideally the backlog should remain prioritised and groomed at all time (unless there is an abrupt requirement arriving) so under routine circumstances, PO being on leave shouldn’t impact the planning session. (Also mostly tech leads are in sync with the priorities set by PO and they can play a proxy product owner in the absence of PO.

Absence of PO from the sprint review session should have little impact if the team has a well defined definition of done and DOD is respected in all cases.

I think before planning session stories are ready in DoR state so sprint planing can be proceed with some prior inputs noted by scrum master and so stories can be picked ?? 🤔 how to see the right answer ?

Hi Sunand, I have been watching your videos to learn more about becoming a Scrum Master. I saw a video on YouTube saying that the PSI and CSM certification now means nothing and that I order to get a scrum master job, one must get one on one coaching from a pro etc. what is your take on this? Also which certification, if any, do you recommend?
