I went to the final three days of the US Open in New York for the semifinals and finals matches for the doubles, women's, and men's. So come along while I talk about prices, crowds, Amex radios, free, stuff and of course tennis as someone who knows very little about tennis. Thank you, players ready.

“Tennis is the healthiest sport” to roughly quote Hank Green, ”it’s probably not the sport, but the typical socio-economic status of a player”

I think it's hilarious how I don't care about 60% of the subjects of these videos, but I love hearing Swell talk about anything, so it doesn't matter.

I work in an operating room, with surgeons who make more money than I can ever dream of. Some of them were saying that the tickets were way too expensive this year, and for them to say it, really means something to me lol

many tennis fans were clowning on the "healthiest sport" tagline bc of how often players have been sick or injured this year 😭😭 especially the sinner-draper sf that had just happened where they were both on the verge of death

Once you avoid the Grand Slams, you can actually watch Tennis at a reasonable price and the quality is still great. I went to the Madrid Open and it was very resonable for a full day of the quarter finals. Nadal was playing another Spaniard and the atmosphere was phenomenal and then I saw Serena playing her match.

You should consider going to see New Zealand vs Ireland in Chicago. Rugby is very entertaining but it would be worth it alone to see the Haka live.

The US Open (in particular) is hugely popular with businesses, firms & banks. Most of the tickets are bought up by companies that gift them to clients to court business or the plan expensive client evenings and use the boxes to be and be seen. It's very Connecticut WASP in finance vibes. And there's a huge desire to see & rub elbows with celebs, very much like NYFW.

the "ballkids" at the US Open are always adults because of the timing of the tournament being end of August, the kids JUST started back at school, so they can't miss those vital first weeks to volunteer to do it so full grown adults get to!

Swell! I was working with the TV crew for the tournament and had all access.. if you come back next year let me know and I can help get you some caviar chicken nugs!

The sign language interpreter being beside the performers is also just way better for people who need them. Like if you need to watch the interpreter and they're off to the side you miss the 'actual' performance

“Tennis is the healthiest sport” I can't think of any other sport with an injury named after it.

omg this is the video i never knew i needed from you. The umpires being passive aggressive and the "hoitey toitety" crowd with areas that are unaccessable unless you pay with your kidneys is so true. Also, the US Open does pay their ball kids! Smaller tournaments don't pay them, though.
Source: I've competed since childhood and was a ball kid in small tournaments.

the US open crowds were awful this year — because all the real fans got priced out and a lot of people who could afford to go just went for the prestige of the event. really sad to see tennis ticket prices as a whole rise when it’s always been relatively affordable to watch. i love this sport, i grew up in an academy (my family was not rich, i had equipment sponsors) and was a high level junior, competing on the international level, and it sucks so fucking bad to see how the general public romanticizing it has just made it feel more inaccessible.

also on the live streaming in the bar thing — courtside seats are honestly kind of awful, it’s not a good viewing angle if you really want to understand what’s happening in the match

I wish you had gotten into Tennis earlier. It's kind of in an end of an era right now. Some of the best players of all time were all playing at the same time. Federer, Nadal, Serena, etc. Most of them have retired in the last couple of years. This would be the equivalent of half the grid in F1 being the greatest drivers of all time, all in the same races for 10-15 years. It was thrilling to say the least.

I love watching ASL interpreters covering music. They’re every bit as much performers as the entertainers themselves so they absolutely should get to share the stage.

The letting you sit wherever helps the stadium look more “full” for non headliner games. They want people from the upper section to move down in order to get a fuller stadium experience. Part of it I think is for the visuals in the broadcast, and part of it I hope is so that the players can see more people in the crowd supporting.

You should consider coming to Phoenix for the Waste Management Open (Golf). They call it “The People’s Open”. It goes against the idea of being quiet and respectful while the pros are playing. It’s quite a sight to see.

As a huge tennis nerd (both as a viewer and a player) it’s really interesting hearing the perspective of someone who’s starting to get into it. Turns out we were both at the Tiafoe/Fritz semifinal too. Glad you had a pretty good time!

late tournament slam tickets are always exorbitant but there's so much value in getting fan week/early round/practice session tickets or tickets to smaller tournaments (masters). oh also, if anyone wants to see more behind the scenes from tournaments What The Vlog is a channel run by a womens tennis player (daria kasatkina) and her gf where they often vlog tournaments!

if you play the Challengers soundtrack at the US open do you think it will make the players all kiss? I hope so
