Canon T3i / 600D Movie Digital Zoom demo and on-board mic test

Показать описание
This is a demonstration of Canon's new EOS Rebel T3i movie digital zoom feature in 1080p. I have also recorded the entire video with the on-board microphone. This video Was rendered with the audio at a sample rate of 48,000 Hz in an attempt to preserve its quality.

This is my first episode of Krotoflik and there will be many more to come. I hope to crank out at least One episode a week if not more. Covering more on the T3i's abilities, DIY tutorials, short movies, fake commercials, random made-up music videos, and hopefully this summer I will be able to upload a full movie I plan on shooting. But I think that will depend on how many subscribers I have? Thanks for watching!

Canon EOS Rebel T3i
18-55mm kit lens
Basic UV filter
onboard microphone
Sony Vegas Pro 10 trial = 1080p at 30fps with .mp4 codec
No color correction was used.

The quality looks like it really starts to deteriorate the closer you get to 10x but it still looks pretty good. I just bought the camera and it should be here tomorrow and I cant wait to try it myself. Thanks a lot for the demo.

@krotoflik Thank you, I actually got it to accept the files! I have Vegas Pro 9, and I uninstalled Quitcktime then re-installed an older version from around the same time Vegas 9. I guess the program just needs to use a Quicktime version it's familiar with.

Hi,

Thanks for the test! Much appreciated.

In fact I was looking for some raw footage (original video from the camera) recorded with the digital zoom at 3x and beyond, to check the image quality and how much aliasing it shows (if it improves comparing to standard 1080p video)

I 3X digital zoom just crops down on the sensor but after 3X it just starts blowing up the image. The Panasonic Lumix GH2 has a smart crop that crops down on the sensor to I think 2.7 and the video looks really good, but the GH2 does not have the zoom feature like Canon does.

The digital smart zoom or digital smart crops are good if you need more reach and keep a faster aperture. Example would be 18mm you are at F3.5 use digital zoom at 3x over a manual zoom at 5mm that ends up at f5.6

Yeah I checked out the other video as well. Nice comparison and its good to see that it does not work the same way that a digital zoom works on lower end cameras - which are almost all worthless.

Well, but that mic input is a normal stereo jack, no xlr. It is not advised to run a unsymmetric audio signal over 25 feet. And most non-xlr microphones are quite shitty anyway. I usually keep away from using the mic input at all and record completely externally. Syncing of Audio and Video is not that hard as long as your clips are not too short and as long as you do it before editing. Just my 2 cents on it.

BTW: I didn't know that you have to switch the option from 1080p to 1080p 3x-10x.

That's too bad, since you can't go from "standard" 1080p to 3x without stopping recording and entering the menu... Thank you VERY much for clearing this point.

Anyway I will download your video at Full HD and try to check the image quality at 3X. Hopefully it would be similar to standard 1080p ? Can you tell us your opinion comparing your original footage?

Thanks a lot.

Liked and subscribed! I'm planning a trip out west next year and was undecided as to whether I wanted a camcorder or a camera. After seeing your video I see that the video feature of the camera is more than good of course for still pictures it will totally annihilate a camcorder. My current equipment is a 480P camcorder and a megapixel camera! just use my phone for now I get a good camera)

To record longer on my Canon:
1. How many gb do I need ?
2. What class card do I need ?
3. What should I set my settings to?
4. What's the best brand of memory card ?
Thank You.

@nash2042007 CLASS 10! The manual even says Class 6 minimum for HD but I've had bad luck with Class 6 stopping while recording sometimes.

@krotoflik Yep! I installed Quicktime 7.6.4, though it looks like any of the 6 or 7 versions would work!

@krotoflik

Hi, I also noticed the kit lens was soft, or maybe you set the Picture Style sharpness to 0 ?

If you use the 50mm 1.8 at f/5.6 you could get a much better image quality, so the test would show up much better the differences in quality between standard 1080p and 1080p 3X-10X mode.

If you can do it, that would be great and very much appreciated

Also, it would be GREAT if you could post captured frames of that test, so we can see the image without the Youtube recompression.

Thanks!
