Is there a growing need for a new political party in the UK and how possible is it to win?

While smaller political parties struggle to compete under first-past-the-post they can have a huge influence on the policies of the two main parties.

“People laughed at Change UK but Jeremy Corbyn was spooked by them. He changed Labour's Brexit line in 2019 to one that supported a second referendum and that had huge political consequences.” - Anoosh Chakelian

So how could groups such as Reform UK and The Reclaim Party impact British politics and will we see the rise of a new political party?

Anoosh Chakelian, Freddie Hayward, and Ben Walker answer a listener question on the role of fringe parties in British politics.

Proportional Representation. Sick of having to tactical vote to get out who I don’t want rather than voting for who I do want.

The two Party system ensures that the Overton window remains deliberately narrow, purges all competing ideas whilst allowing lively debate within the confines of that window.
Some could suspect that it's designed that way.

PR is essential for a better politics in the UK.

The problem is that although quite often polls show that voters want a third party to vote for, everyone imagines a party they would vote for with an impressive leader and great policies. But it requires impressive people to go ahead and create such a party and for the policies to magically agree with everyone's fantasy of their dream party. In reality new parties are formed by flawed people (just as existing parties are) and then they decide on policies that a lot of people might disagree with. Not only that, the best moment for any new party is the day it is formed. How do you keep it going when the news agenda moves elsewhere? After you have joined the party, what is next?

The Labour Party is certainly not a broad church at present under Starmer. His policy has been to force out of the party anyone who is even vaguely left-wing.

The UK and, believe it or not, Belarus are the only two European countries who still use the outdated majoritarian or 'first past the post' electoral system. The UK also has an unelected upper house with a power of veto, making the UK the least democratic country in Europe - as if we didn't already know...

Labour need a majority insufficient to work with or a small shortfall and to have the LibDems to push them on Electoral Reform, EU and Environmental issues such as pollution

Pretty sure it was Starmer that made an off the cuff remark that Labour would hold a second referndum on rejoining the EU. It wasn't Corbyns strategy until Starmer placed Labour in that space.

SDP Liberal Alliance in '83 won 28% of the vote to Labour's 29%, but Alliance only won 23 seats and a lot of second places.

FPTP and the corrupt media are the two reasons why a new party will NEVER beat the two main parties.

Hope and pray that Labour is forced into adopting PR and that PR becomes our reformed electoral system. Really like the NZ system of MMP for both local/regional and national representation.

It could, but it would need sitting MPs with a reputation and following to join.

At the moment we have the illusion of choice. We definitely need a real alternative.

Pointing to new 'centerist' parties was interesting mainly because they didnt really represent many people's interests. There is plenty of room to the left of Labour for a new party and some room on the right especially for one which would be okay being more economically distrbutive. Especially under FPTP your challenge is funding. A new left wing party could get a lot of engaged campaginers but will struggle for early capital that would help it make a statement as more thsn a small gimmick. For the right it is easier to attract funding from a bunch of millionaires but its likely to eat away at that more distributive economy space as rich people dont like funding themselves getting poorer. There is plenty of other factors but challenging the two main parties financially is a big hurdle. Personally i would have loved to see the trade union movement strike out with a new party focusing on things like sectoral barginning, renationalisarion, and investment but it doesnt seem they have the drive for it

What we need to start off is honesty and common sense, also we need to get rid of party whips, as far as I'm concerned what's the point in having voted for an MP and his party decides which way he votes! my local MP never voted once against his party! and I'm sure it's not what his consituents would have wanted. Even Local councils are not Democratic, and I'm talking all councils, labour councils going against constituents wishes as far as I'm concerned is criminal.

Well Kasper does not seem to know that a third party would help the conservatives unless we have PR, I am also 13

It is much easier to take over a current party from the inside. Much as what has happened to the Conservatives!

The current Labour Party is not a broad church nthe Tory Party is a rowdy bar.

Why does nobody mention Compass? An existing Progressive Liberal Left alliance that for some reason stays an under the radar conference group. Caroline Lucas, Vince Cable, some Corbynistas... Seems like the germ of a new centre/left, 'agree to disagree' forum.

New parties will get nowhere under FPTP. That's why the "main" parties cling on to it.
