From the album Welcome to the Canteen.
Progressive rock/ Jazz Fusion

Welcome to the Canteen is the fifth album by English rock band Traffic. It was recorded live at Fairfield Halls, Croydon and the Oz Benefit Concert, London, July 1971 and released in September of that year. It was recorded during Dave Mason's third stint with the band, which lasted only six performances.
The tracklist includes one song each from the first three Traffic albums; two songs from Mason's first solo album, Alone Together; and "Gimme Some Lovin'" from Steve Winwood's former band, the Spencer Davis Group. (Winwood's organ and Mason's rhythm guitar are conspicuously out of sync for part of "Gimme Some Lovin'".)

• Steve Winwood -- lead vocals (except on "Sad and Deep as You" and "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave"), organ, electric piano, electric guitar on "Dear Mr.Fantasy", acoustic guitar on "40,000 Headmen"

• Jim Capaldi -- tambourine, percussion, backing vocal on "Medicated Goo"

• Chris Wood -- sax, flute, electric piano, organ

• Dave Mason- lead vocals on "Sad and Deep as You" and "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave", lead guitar, acoustic guitar on "Sad and Deep as You"

• Ric Grech -- electric bass

• Rebop Kwaku Baah -- congas, timbales, bongos

• Jim Gordon -- drums

Great album - there was a stretch in 1974-75 when Traffic was my favorite band of all - they never had a bad tune

I picked this album up at The Book Barn for a couple of dollars about 20 years ago. I opened it and it had enough reefer in the binder for a joint. It still worked after who knows how many years!!

I'm stunned ! Only 10, 000 views of this..one of the best bands and best live albums EVER! Seems like the critics, who largely poo-pooed this in '71, are not the only ones suffering a recto-cranial inversion!! TOO BAD!!! They know not what they have missed !!

They couldn't have gotten a better sax/woodwind player than Chris Wood. Miss him a lot.

Had this album, along with other Traffic gems. I loved playing this song on guitar, very funky rhythm. Rock on Dave Mason!

Why this version of the song wasn't a big hit has always stumped me. And I just love the overall sound of the album, it sounds so authentically live, the way the crowd is miked and the resonance of the hall. All instruments sound awesome; only drawback is the vocal drop-outs in a few places. One of the all-time greatest live albums IMO. I hope that one day a more complete version of this show will be issued.

A tape of this Traffic got me through a year at SUNY Albany sitting in the campus center. it's funny to think of what most of the other students were into. Maybe Shaggy? Britney Spears? And lots of other modern day shit.

Lyrics
Pretty Polly Possum what's wrong with you?
Your body's kind a weak and you think there's nothing we can do
Good Golly Polly shame on you
'Cause Molly made a stew that'll make a newer girl out of you

So follow me, it's good for you
That good old fashioned medicated goo
Ooo, ain't it good for you?
My own homegrown recipe'll see you through

Freaky Freddy Frolic had some I know
He was last seen picking green flowers in a field of snow
Get ready Freddy, they're sure to grow
Mother nature just blew it and there's nothing really to it I know

So follow me, it's good for you
That good old fashioned medicated goo
Ooo, ain't it good for you?
My own homegrown recipe'll see you through

Aunty Franny Prickett and uncle Lou they made some goo
Now they really sock it to their friends
Frantic friends and neighbors charge the door
They caught a little whiff now they're digging it and seeking more

So follow me, it's good for you
That good old fashioned medicated goo
Ooo, ain't it good for you?
My own homegrown recipe'll see you through

So follow me, it's good for you
That good old fashioned medicated goo
Ooo, ain't it good for you?
My own homegrown recipe'll see you through

This song just straight kicks ass. I saw him open for Tom Petty. He did this live and it sounded amazing.
