for anyone trying to do similar stuff that runs into the lack of 12v power when the system is turned off, there’s a slightly easier way to get standby power that doesn’t involve splicing into the 24 pin connector: most modern motherboards have a bios setting that gives all usb ports 5v from the standby line, so using that and just hooking up the boostconverter to an internal usb 2.0 header gives you the same functionality, slightly less jankily

fyi: if you have a laser cutter, you can also microperforate the wood laminate so that the RGB shines through even more effectively when turned off, and are still unseen when powered off.

Very awesome build! I have some notes:
The AMOLED screen deserves a pattern with true black values(hide the borders!)
You can open a harddrive, re-seal it, and have it working. It requires a lot of skill and equipment, but data recovery specialists apparently do this and might be able to help you there(they know some kind of black magic apparently).
