Created by Walter Jeans around 1927
Based on his Silver Hat illusion from 1912.
Selbit premiered in 1928 in London as “The Million Dollar Mystery.”
Clive Maskelyne bought rights from Jeans in 1928
Noel Maskelyne performed it
Also, in 1928, Howard Thurston purchased American rights from Jeans.
Thurston performed it in 1929.
In 1970, Blackstone Jr. performed it on the Smothers Brothers show to produce the entire cast, including orchestra, from a telephone booth.
Doug Henning and David Copperfield have both done a variation.
Mike Caveney owns Carter’s Million Dollar Mystery.
In Classic Correspondence Vol 3, he said it is “The Greatest Illusion I have ever seen.”

I built a Twenty One Person Production Cabinet for a friend years ago (simular to the one Doug Henning used to produce the cheerleaders), fantastic effect.

I was thinking of a different trick I thought was called million dollar mystery, performed by Harry Anderson that used two of spectators' bills, torn, burned and returned. I don't think I am remembering the right name.
